A little Elvis.
Whether you are 5, 50 or 90 years old the chances are you will have heard the name Elvis Presley. Born on January 8th, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Vernon and Gladys Presley, Elvis certainly had humble beginnings. His twin brother, sadly, was stillborn and Elvis remained an only child.
In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor and by 1956, he was an international sensation. Influenced by Gospel music, and the black musicians R and B, the music of Elvis was a new sound and phenomenon. It was raunchy and the moves that Elvis used whist performing shocked more than just a few.
Elvis's career had its ups and downs but he seemed to weather them all. He became unfashionable at one time as the next generation turned to different music. However Elvis was the king of the comeback and he had a full career.
He made thirty three films during his long career and despite some of these being predictable and corny most were box office successes. Managed by Colonel Tom Parker he was often given little choice in his film career. His recording career was successful and his final years were
spent performing in Las Vegas.
The celebrity life style took its toll on Elvis's marriage and his health. He divorced and his health deteriorated with rumours of drug abuse. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977 aged just 42 and the world lost, probably, its best ever performer.
Elvis was a beautiful looking man, with a voice to melt the iciest heart. His music has lived on and is as popular today, in 2009, as ever.
